This is one of the special years for the cinema, Especially for the Tamil cinema. A lot of content-driven movies came out this year and went on to become the highest grossers while a few stars faced bomb at the Box Office. This has been a good year for women-centric movies as well.

10. Kolamavu Kokila – IMDb Rating: 7.4


The Nayanthara Starrer was fun and did go on to become one of the biggest hits of the year.

Movie Plot: To save her mother from terminal cancer, a young girl gets herself involved with the drug trafficking mafia active in the small towns of Tamil Nadu.

9. Imaikkaa Nodigal (2018)– IMDb Rating: 7.5

Yet another Nayanthara starrer that went on to rock this year. The movie also stared Atharva, Vijay Sethupathi and this marked the debut of Anurag Kashyap as the villain in Tamil cinema.

Movie Plot: A suave CBI officer (Nayanthara), is in search of a serial killer who kidnaps and kills the children of important people. The killer, however, is targeting his nemesis next.

8. Chekka Chivantha Vaanam- IMDb Rating: 7.6

After Kaatru Veliyidai, Mani Ratnam came back stronger with a different genre multi-starrer. Prakash Raj, Aravind Sami, Jyothika, Vijay Sethupathi, Simbu, Arun Vijay, Aishwarya Rajesh and a few more. This movie opened to positive reviews and became a roaring hit.

Movie Plot: A bloody power struggle erupts between three brothers who are vying to take over the family business following the death of their father.

7 Irumbu Thirai- IMDb Rating: 7.7

Actor Vishal’s major hit of the year came through Irumbu Thirai. This movie also starred Samantha, Arjun and Delhi Ganesh in important roles.

Movie Plot: A soldier takes on a gang of cybercriminals when money goes missing from his account.

6. Mahanati- IMDB rating: 8.8

Keerthy Suresh had the break of her career with Mahanati. She perfectly portrayed the role of actress Savithri and the movie still stands as one of the best biopics ever made.

Not many movies fulfil the expectations but 96 is a class apart. The life story of Ram and Jaanu will always stay close to the heart.

2. Merku Thodarchi Malai IMDb Rating: 9.1

One of the classic movies came out this season, deals with the problems at the borders of Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

Movie Plot: Rangasamy, a labourer living on the borders of Kerala and Tamil Nadu just like his fellow sons of soils toils, hard-working at the spice plantations owned by landlords. Whilst Rangasamy is content with his life, he yearns to own a piece of land and earn a living by farming. After years of struggle, his dream finally comes true when Chacko, a local politician helps him buy the land, however, he soon faces tougher challenges as he has to deal with corrupt and wealthy politicians and the movie goes with the flow.

The best movie, according to IMDb, stars Kathir and Anandhi in the lead roles. This movie will talk about casteism and its outcome through the vision of Pari, Kathir.

Movie Plot: A law student from a lower caste begins a friendship with his classmate, a girl who belongs to a higher caste, and the men in her family start giving him trouble over this.
