Oscar Shortlist Documentary Featuring Muruganantham

‘Period. End of Sentence’ is a documentary based on Arunachalam Murugganantham, inventor of low-cost napkins from Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. The documentary revolves around the stigma against menstruation and how he fought against all the odds to make his mark for girl’s hygiene.

It was his work that made the documentary shortlist in Oscar in Documentary Short Subject Category. The documentary was directed by Iranian-American, Rayaka Zehtabchi.

In an interview with Arunachalam, he was very excited to share his thoughts. He said that there should more films with a social message, like Padman and documentaries like this, showing the importance of menstrual hygiene. He was very obliged when the maker of the documentary came up with all his homework done on the subject to ask him whether he could do it or not. And he immediately agreed on doing it.

He also talked about menstrual hygiene awareness is not much effective in certain countries such as Ethiopia, Tanzania, Bangladesh, and Indonesia. It’s even the same in our Country India. Talking about menstrual hygiene is considered a Taboo in India. He said documentaries like this, is a fight against the Taboo. With such great thought and idea documentary deserves to be an Oscar. And let’s hope it to bring change in thoughts about menstrual hygiene.
