Central Railway Station to be named after MGR: Modi

The historic Chennai Central Railway station will be named after legendary actor and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M G Ramachandran, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Wednesday. He also said the Union Government was “seriously thinking” about making in-flight announcements in Tamil on flights that take off from and land in Tamil Nadu.

“I am happy to share two things with you. We have decided to re-name the Chennai Central Station after the great MGR. We are also seriously thinking about ensuring that flights to and from Tamil Nadu have in-flight announcements in the Tamil language,” Modi said, addressing a public meeting organised by the AIADMK-BJP-PMK alliance.

Through the announcement, Modi has fulfilled one of the major demands of the AIADMK government led by Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami. The government had recommended naming of Central station after MGR and conferring of Bharat Ratna to its leaders C N Annadurai and J Jayalalithaa.
