Iranian couple arrested after their public marriage proposal video goes viral

In Iran, a couple got arrested as their public proposal video went viral on Social Media. This video didn’t go well with the Islamic officials and it was deemed offensive as it was against the country’s Islamic doctrines, However, the police later released the couple on bail.

In the video, the man can be seen standing inside a heart-shaped ring of flower petals as his girlfriend stares at him. Much to the excitement of the crowd, he places a ring on the woman’s hand followed by loud cheers from onlookers. The video ends after the couple shares a hug and step out of the ring of flowers. The proposal took place inside a mall.

“Offense is very clear and there is no need for explanation. To do whatever is common in other places of the world and disregard mores, culture and religion,” Arak deputy police chief Mostafa Norouzi later told the Shahrvand daily.

Iran’s strict Islamic laws, which constantly takes a dig at Western ideals, state that men and women are forbidden from exhibiting public display of affection. This also involves kissing and dancing in public.

However, this wasn’t the first case where Iranian citizens were arrested for breaking the country’s public decency laws.

Teenager Maedeh Hojabri was arrested after a video of herself dancing to western and Iranian pop songs went viral on social media.

The arrest sparked a huge outrage on social media and thousands of Iranian women took to the streets support Hojabri and even record themselves dancing in public places.
